In Thursday’s (4/5) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes, “When the Max M. Fisher Music Center opened in 2003, the DSO promised to ramp up a full menu of activity in the new recital hall called the Music Box. The idea was that performances there would encompass contemporary classical music, chamber ensembles, jazz, world music and all sorts of other alternative programming, including spoken word. The concept was to create a more casual performance space that was more inviting to younger audiences and others for whom the rarified setting and traditionalism of Orchestra Hall was a turnoff. There was an initial burst of concerts, before grant money and other sources of income ran out. … Now the DSO appears to be gearing up for another push, inaugurating a series called Mix @ the Max that promises the opportunity to marry a concert with the opportunity to mingle, nosh on food from Cliff Bell’s, Majestic Café and Seva and have a drink on the house—all for $25. The first band on tap is the Knights, a fast-rising Brooklyn-based chamber orchestra of young musicians with an eclectic repertoire, open attitude and an infectious, charismatic spirit that’s winning audiences in person and on CD.”
