Tennessee’s Knoxville Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of MELANIE STATEN as communications director. She brings to the job extensive background in media and public relations, most recently as communications and media director for the Knoxville-based nonprofit Amputee Coalition of America. Previous posts include deputy assistant press secretary at the White House and managing editor of the White House News Summary; press secretary to a congressman from Illinois; director of legislative and political issues, and subsequently director of promotion, for the United States Chamber of Commerce. Staten has worked as a radio, television, and newspaper reporter and as public relations director for a large retirement community in Northern Virginia. She has also served as a choir director and has choreographed and directed numerous musical productions in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
