American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras, in residence at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts (Fairfax, Va.), has announced the appointment of LAURA WOOLLEN CAHN as conductor of its American Youth String Ensemble. A native of Fairfax and alumna of the American Youth Philharmonic (1996-2000), she holds a bachelor’s degree in viola performance from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree from Butler University, and a Master of Arts and Teaching degree in instrumental music from the University of Indianapolis. Cahn made her conducting debut with the Indianapolis-based New World Youth Concert Orchestra. She has served as music director of KIPP DC: AIM Academy, a middle school in Washington, D.C., and since 2009 has taught at the Colorado Suzuki Institute in Beaver Creek, Colo.
