Students in the Play On, Philly! afterschool music-education program will perform onstage at the beginning of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s April 28 subscription concert at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia. The young musicians will perform short selections for approximately five minutes before the start of the concert, which features Simon Rattle guest conducting a program of Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 (“Rhenish”). The orchestra reports that it partnered with Play On, Philly! to foster generational change and provide musical opportunities for children living in challenging economic and social conditions. This is the second year of operation for Play On, Philly!, an El Sistema-inspired afterschool music education program for underserved children in Philadelphia founded by Curtis graduate Stanford Thompson.
