Make Music New York, the one-day citywide festival of free outdoor music on the first day of summer, has announced details of its sixth annual event. Highlights throughout New York City’s five boroughs on June 21 include Alvin Curran’s Maritime Rites performed by musicians from the West Point Band and Montclair State University from boats in the Central Park Lake, with spectators listening from on shore. Mass Appeal—concerts featuring large groups of a single instrument—this year will feature violinists in Prokofiev’s Sonata for Unaccompanied Violins, Op. 115, on a closed-off block near the Cornelia Street Café in Greenwich Village. New this year is a “World Tour” of decorated musical buses decorated in Colombian “chiva” style, ferrying audiences between various music locations; participating “World Tour” organizations include the Museum for African Art, the Americas Society, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Asian American Arts Alliance, and the New York Arabic Orchestra. A “tag team” of vibraphonists will perform Satie’s eighteen-hour composition Vexations near the corner of Broad and Wall streets, led by Amy Garapic.
