In Tuesday’s (5/15) Contra Costa Times (California), Sue Gilmore writes, “The Berkeley Symphony, which has just extended music director Joana Carneiro’s contract for five more years, has announced a new season that will contain a commissioned world premiere on each of its four subscription concert programs. The 2012-13 season will open at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Zellerbach Hall with Bay Area composer Paul Dresher serving as soloist in performance of his own new work. The as-yet unnamed piece will feature two instruments of his invention—the pluckable, bowable Quadrachord and the hand-cranked Hurdy Grande—and be anchored on a program that includes Charles Ives’ ‘The Unanswered Question’ and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. A new work from Dylan Mattingly, a 21-year-old Bay Area native and protégé of John Adams, will highlight the 8 p.m. Dec. 6 concert, also conducted by Carneiro. … A new work from Carneiro’s fellow countryman Andreia Pinto-Correia of Portugal will receive its world premiere here, and Carneiro will conduct it again in Lisbon with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in April. … The Under Construction series featuring new works by emerging composers will present concerts on Dec. 9 and April 7.”
