The St. Cloud (Minn.) Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of CLINTON SMITH as artistic director and principal conductor. He is currently assistant/cover conductor and chorus master at Minnesota Opera, and will retain those posts. Smith’s previous posts include assistant conductor/chorus master for San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, assistant conductor/coach at Glimmerglass Opera (Cooperstown, N.Y.), conductor of the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, and conductor/coach for France’s Opéra du Périgord and the Austrian-American Mozart Opera Academy in Salzburg. He has also led ensembles at the University of Texas and the University of Michigan, where he received his formal training. Smith will make his debut as principal conductor of the St. Cloud Symphony on September 11 at the opening concert of its 2012-13 season.
