Thursday (5/24) on South Florida Classical Review, Lawrence Budmen writes, “The New World Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and music publisher Boosey & Hawkes will collaborate in New Voices, a joint commissioning project that will identify and provide professional development for emerging young composers. Each season the three partners will guide a young composer from the Americas through the commissioning, preparation and performance of a chamber music work and a score for full orchestra, providing support on the publication, promotion and presentation of the composer’s work. ‘The future of classical music depends on nurturing composers,’ said Michael Tilson Thomas, artistic director of the New World Symphony and music director of the San Francisco Symphony. … The first composer chosen for the program is Zosha Di Castri, who will be commissioned to write two new works, one for chamber ensemble and one for full orchestra. … At the New World Symphony, Di Castri will work with Tilson Thomas, New World fellows, guest artists, conductors and coaches as the two scores are work-shopped in preparation for premieres by the New World Symphony in May, 2013. A two-week residency at the San Francisco Symphony will culminate in performances of the two scores in the fall of 2013.”
