JENNIFER CHRISTEN has been appointed principal oboe at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, filling the post formerly held by Malcolm Smith, who retired in 2007 after 34 years with the orchestra. Christen most recently played under Michael Tilson Thomas at Miami’s New World Symphony. She previously served as assistant principal oboe at the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and has performed as a substitute with the Metropolitan Opera and Buffalo Philharmonic orchestras. Christen received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School of Music, where she studied under Nathan Hughes, Elaine Douvas, and John Mack.
