In Sunday’s (6/17) Cincinnati Enquirer, Janelle Gelfand reports, “About $20,000 worth of musical scores, photos and memorabilia were destroyed when a pipe at Music Hall leaked water onto shelves in a dressing room being used as an annex to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s library last week. The orchestra is still assessing the damage to the scores, props and items belonging to the Cincinnati Symphony, Pops and the Cincinnati May Festival, but confirmed that historic photos of the late Cincinnati Pops conductor Erich Kunzel were among those items damaged. When the leak was discovered last Monday, Music Hall employees formed a ‘bucket line’ to remove boxes of scores from the small room, one of several being used for library space. The damage represents a small percentage of the orchestra’s collection. … Orchestra spokesman Chris Pinelo estimated its value as $4.69 million. Scores are replaceable. But these scores contained performance markings, made by the historic figures who conducted the performances. Consequently, said Pinelo, ‘You lose a piece of living history of the orchestra.’ ”
