Australia’s Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of DIEGO MATHEUZ to a three-year term as principal guest conductor beginning in 2013.  A graduate of Venezuela’s El Sistema music education program, the 27-year-old conductor and violinist is currently active in Italy, where he is principal guest conductor of Orchestra Mozart (Bologna) and of Teatro La Fenice (Venice). Recent guest conducting activities include a tour of Italy with Venezuela’s Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, concerts in Japan and China with Seiji Ozawa’s Saito Kinen Orchestra, and engagements with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra. Matheuz began violin studies in his hometown of Barquisimeto before moving to Caracas. He made his international conducting debut in 2008 leading the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico.
