Given the country’s multicultural heritage and ever-increasing globalization, how do we represent “America” through classical music? With American orchestras facing this question every Fourth of July, Allison Eck surveys a variety of programs coast to coast and speaks with Minnesota Orchestra Associate Conductor Courtney Lewis about his own approach to the question.

Also this week, we take you behind the scenes at the New York Philharmonic’s season-closing “360” program at the Park Avenue Armory, where the orchestra surrounded the audience, and Sphinx Organization founder and League board member Aaron Dworkin offers a passionate response to political commentarian Bill Maher’s assertion that the arts are “non-essential” and don’t deserve non-profit status.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
