Canada’s Toronto Symphony Orchestra has commissioned Tod Machover to write A Toronto Symphony: A Concerto for City and Composer, which will have its world premiere in March 2013 during the orchestra’s 2013 New Creations Festival. As part of the composition process, Machover is crowdsourcing sounds submitted by Toronto residents; the new composition will combine those crowdsourced elements and Machover’s own music into a single work. Machover, a professor of music and media at MIT’s Media Lab, has written compositions for traditional Western classical instruments and for his own “hyperinstruments.” He developed music software that led to the creation of the Guitar Hero videogame. Sounds for the Toronto Symphony project can be submitted by uploading videos to YouTube or Soundcloud, posting a video or recording at Facebook, or by emailing a link to a video or recording.
