In Monday’s (7/16) Arizona Republic (Phoenix), Betty Reid writes, “A group of north Phoenix musicians plans to assemble an orchestra with a goal to perform its first concert in November. The North Valley Symphony Orchestra seeks to organize a group of teachers who will offer pop and classical music shows. Former ProMusica Arizona artistic director Kevin Kozacek will lead the group. Kozacek said his mission is to ‘build community through music.’ … The orchestra’s membership includes school teachers, musicians and students who are receiving music lessons. Kozacek said about 55 people signed up for the orchestra. He envisions capping participation at 80. There still is room for bassoonists, strings, viola, cello and contrabass. At the shows, Kozacek plans to use program text messages that will give the audience an opportunity to receive information about a musical [selection]. This would involve people signing up for the program at the beginning of each concert. ‘At orchestra concerts that are currently providing program texts, people seem to like the interactive quality of the concept,’ he said.”
