In Monday’s (7/23) Topeka Capital-Journal (Kansas), Bill Blankenship writes, “The 2012-13 season of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra will feature seven concerts with seven different conductors, five of them candidates to succeed John Strickler as the ensemble’s next music director. Strickler, who led the orchestra since 1989, resigned at the end of the last season. This season will follow the process the symphony used to select him by bringing in to conduct a concert the five finalists a 10-member search committee selected from a pool of 125 applicants for the job. Each conductor will be paired with a guest artist for the five classical music programs. Audience members will have an opportunity to submit their comments on each conductor before one is selected to lead the orchestra next season. The 2012-13 season also will include two pops concerts, each of them featuring guest artists and conductors.” The five candidates for music director are Diane Wittry, Kelly Corcoran, Kyle Wiley Pickett, Christopher Kelts, and Brendan Townshend.
