Thursday (7/26) on the Denver Post online, John Wenzel reports, “The Colorado Springs Philharmonic has something to celebrate as it prepares for its season-opening ‘Pines of Roman’ program (Sept. 15-16 at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts). The Tulsa, Okla.-based Mary K. Chapman Foundation, which recently opened an office in Colorado Springs, has awarded the Philharmonic $90,000 to co-sponsor its pops program. ‘The Chapman Foundation is new in town down here,’ said Philharmonic marketing manager Nathan C. Willers. ‘They have recently been added to the mix and have only just started granting to local organizations, in addition to El Pomar and Bee Vrandenburg and some other larger foundations. So we’re not the first, but we’re one of the early ones and we’re awfully excited about the size of this grant.’ Willers said the Philharmonic had been seeking a sponsor for its pops program for awhile now and that the money is ‘a big deal to us.’ … The $90,000 will be split up into $30,000 chunks over three seasons. … The Philharmonic was looking for about $60,000 per year to sponsor its pops program, which is far less than it takes to produce and perform the series, so the Chapman grant covers half of that through 2015.”
