Orchestras on the radio are common enough, but radio on an orchestra program perhaps less so. On July 28, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, under the direction of Marin Alsop, will present the world premiere of The Hidden World of Girls: Stories for Orchestra, based on the NPR series of the same name hosted by Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson. Silva and composer Laura Karpman, who served as creative director for the Cabrillo premiere, talk with Megan Emberton about the process of putting the program together.

Also this week, students at the National Symphony’s Summer Music Institute give progress reports, and the Olympic torch gets a lift from Los Angeles Philharmonic Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
