In Sunday’s (8/5) Cincinnati Enquirer, Janelle Gelfand reports, “At a challenging time for orchestras and when the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra was between music directors, the orchestra increased both its subscription sales and attendance last season. And in one of the largest concert halls in the world, 3,417-seat Music Hall, the orchestra reported four sold-out concerts, including a single-night performance by violin legend Izhak Perlman. The Cincinnati Pops sold out two performances. Average attendance for classical concerts at Music Hall was 1,891, an increase of nearly 8 percent. That uptick follows a banner year the previous season—Paavo Järvi’s last as music director—that saw a jump in attendance of 11.5 percent. Symphony subscriptions climbed 3 percent. … The orchestra offered subscribers of 10 or more concerts a free ticket to a season opening gala concert, which last year featured Perlman. … For the first of two seasons without a music director, the Cincinnati Symphony engaged three creative directors: Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, pianist Lang Lang and composer Philip Glass, each presiding over a subscription series. In April, the orchestra announced that French conductor Louis Langrée will succeed Järvi as music director. He begins in the 2013-14 season.”
