In Tuesday’s (8/7) Des Moines Register (Iowa), Kevin Kirkpatrick writes, “A new Simpson College orchestra will make its debut this fall. The orchestra will consist primarily of Simpson College students, but the music department is looking for community members to fill out its string section. The orchestra is open to anyone who is interested and willing to attend weekly rehearsals. Mike Eckerty, assistant director of music and director of instrumental ensembles at Simpson, will conduct. ‘The reason for getting it organized was to have the opportunity for college students to participate in an orchestra; both for the college students who are already here studying, as well as those who want to continue the skill that they learn,’ Eckerty said. ‘As well as to provide an orchestra playing and listening opportunity for the community.’ Auditions will be held Sunday, Aug. 26, in the Amy Robertson Music Center at Simpson College. … The first concert will be held on Sunday, Nov. 18. Rehearsals and concerts will be held throughout the Simpson academic year. Linda Benoit, violin and viola instructor, said this new ensemble will provide current wind instrument majors at Simpson College a valuable orchestral experience.”
