In Tuesday’s (8/7) Providence Journal (Rhode Island), Channing Gray reports, “The Rhode Island Philharmonic has been awarded a special $1 million grant from the Kresge Foundation, money that is earmarked for upkeep for the orchestra’s 41,000-square-foot home in East Providence. Word of the sizeable award came Tuesday morning in an e-mail from the Michigan-based foundation, started by the family that founded Kmart. The orchestra can spend $250,000 right now to replace part of the roof and upgrade the heating and cooling system. The remaining $750,000 is to be set aside for ongoing maintenance.”
