The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory will kick off the third season of its Community Opus Project with a day of free events on August 11 at the Chula Vista Middle School. The open house will include face-painting, ice cream, and raffles, as well as performances by COP ensembles, SDYS Community Teaching Artist Ramón Negrón, and state assemblyman Ben Hueso. The SDYS launched the Community Opus Project in 2010 with the Chula Vista Elementary School District to provide free afterschool music instruction to third-graders at two elementary schools. In 2011 the program was expanded to third- and fourth-graders at six elementary schools, and during 2012-13 year the program will add two new after-school youth orchestras for  middle- and high-school students.
