A documentary film project centering on Play On, Philly!, an El Sistema-inspired music-education program based in West Philadelphia, has begun a fundraising campaign at the crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. For the documentary, which is being directed by Anthony Drazan and produced by Jamie Bernstein and Elizabeth Kling, the goal is to raise $50,000 to cover costs of filming the program’s third year in 2012-13. The campaign began on July 31 and ends on September 23; as of August 13, $24,117 had been raised toward the $50,000 goal. The Play On, Philly! free music-education program was launched in 2010 by 23-year-old trumpeter Stanford Thompson, an alumnus of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Talent Development Program, Curtis Institute of Music, and New England Conservatory’s Sistema Fellows Program. Partners and supporters of the project include the Leonard Bernstein Foundation, Kidznotes, Pricehillwill Foundation, League of American Orchestras, Miami Music Project, Chicago Music School, A.C.M.E, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, CMUSE Organization, and Bravo Waterbury!
