In Saturday’s (9/8) State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois), Chris Dettro writes, “When the Illinois Symphony Orchestra board hired Trevor Orthmann in 2009 as its executive director, board members may not have known they also were getting a world-class amateur athlete. When Orthmann competes in the 40-44 age group at the 2012 World Duathlon Championships in Nancy, France, on Sept. 23, it will be his sixth trip to the worlds, although his first since 2007. Duathlons normally consist of a 10K run, followed by a 40K cycling leg and concluding with a 5K running leg. It’s like a triathlon without the swimming, and in fact is governed internationally by the International Triathlon Union. Orthmann started participating when the sport still was called biathlon in 1996. … To qualify this year, Orthmann had to place in the top 25 of his age group at the national duathlon championships in Tucson in April. He didn’t attempt to qualify in 2008, the year he got married in New Jersey, nor in 2009 and 2010, when he concentrated on his new job in Springfield. He competed but didn’t qualify last year.”
