In Sunday’s (9/9) Birmingham News (Alabama), Michael Huebner writes, “The search for a new Alabama Symphony music director gathers momentum next weekend when American conductor Andrew Grams takes the podium in the opening Masterworks concerts for 2012-13. … Four possible candidates—Evan Rogister, Case Scaglione, Danail Rachev and Rory McDonald, conducted in 2011-12. Twelve more will appear this season. Stefan Sanderling, Tito Munoz, Julian Kuerti, Courtney Lewis, Rossen Milanov, Eric Jacobsen, Alasdair Neale, Cristian Macelaru, James Judd, Edwin Outwater and Daniel Meyer await engagements. … ‘Even if a conductor came to town who we absolutely loved, we would want to spend more time with them than just one week before we would make that kind of decision,’ said Curt Long, ASO’s executive director.’ Justin Brown, who in six seasons led the orchestra through two CDs, three ASCAP awards, and its Carnegie Hall debut as part of Spring for Music, ‘announced last year that he was stepping down and taking a less-active position as music director laureate. … Long is careful about defining who might be labeled a ‘candidate,’ but, he said, ‘as the search moves into the next phase, it will become quite clear who we’re looking at seriously.’ The search committee is made up of 10 members, four of them orchestra musicians.”
