In Wednesday’s (9/5) Roanoke Times (Virginia), Mike Allen reports, “The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra finished its anxious fiscal year debt free. In May, RSO launched a $250,000 fundraiser, called the Crescendo Campaign, amid concerns that the symphony would conclude its 2011-12 season operating in the red. The factors officials cited included reduced government funding and a grant the symphony expected to receive that didn’t come through. At a press conference Wednesday, RSO Executive Director Beth Pline said tight expense control allowed the nonprofit to finish the fiscal year with a small surplus, which was used to pay off the line of credit the symphony had to borrow on to make ends meet. With a month to go in the Crescendo Campaign, which concludes Oct. 1, RSO has about $10,000 left to raise to meet its goal, she said. … RSO has launched a new monthly subscription system intended to keep revenue coming in year-round. Pline said the organization hopes the new system will help stave off the need to borrow in the future. RSO also announced that popular conductor and music director David Stewart Wiley’s contract will be extended three more years, into 2016.”
