Later this week, classical-music radio station WQXR will devote one of its programs to troubles currently facing American orchestras, and during the lead-up period it has posted an online poll asking, “What would fix broken American orchestras?” A second poll also asks, “Are orchestras doing enough to innovate?” Among the orchestras to be covered in the upcoming radio program are the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the San Antonio Symphony. More information on the program is available here. This week’s program is part of WQXR’s music-industry debate series Conducting Business series, hosted by Naomi Lewin and produced by Brian Wise. Previous topics in the series have included checking musical instruments on airplanes; smartphones in the concert hall; and protocols for audience applause at classical concerts.
