What do you get when you bring together musicians from top orchestras around the country? The All-Star Orchestra. During four intense days in New York City, musicians from orchestras in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and elsewhere performed ambitious repertoire under the baton of Gerard Schwarz. Sessions were filmed by PBS for an eight-part broadcast series intended to make classical music more accessible. On SymphonyNOW, National Symphony Orchestra cellist Steven Honigberg gives a first-hand account.

Also this week, cellist Peter Sachon offers provocative thoughts on breaking standard routines of orchestral programming, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Director Leonard Slatkin’s new book Conducting Business gives a candid snapshot of conducting life, on and off the podium.

Symphony
NOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
