BRETT MITCHELL, now beginning his third season as music director of the Saginaw Bay (Mich.) Symphony Orchestra, has signed a three-year renewal of his contract, which now extends through July 2016. Mitchell is also music director of the Moores Opera Center in Houston, and in May 2011 concluded his tenure as assistant conductor of the Houston Symphony. Previous posts including assistant conductor, Orchestre National de France (2006-09); director of orchestras, Northern Illinois University (2005-07); and associate conductor, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (2002-06). Mitchell participated in the National Symphony Orchestra’s National Conducting Institute and, from 2007 to 2010, in the League of American Orchestras’ American Conducting Fellows Program. He holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was also music director of the University Orchestra. A native of Seattle, Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Western Washington University.
