The deadline is January 4, 2013 for composers under age 30 to submit previously unpublished and unperformed works for the New York Youth Symphony’s First Music commissioning program. Seven winners in three categories—orchestra, chamber music, and jazz—will be selected in spring 2013. Each winner will receive $1,000 and have his or her selected composition performed at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, or the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Previous winners commissions in the First Music program, initiated in 1984, include Derek Bermel, Kevin Puts, Augusta Read Thomas, and Michael Torke.
