WILLIAM HESTAND has been appointed second bassoon in The Cleveland Orchestra, effective in November. He succeeds PHILLIP AUSTIN, who joined the orchestra in 1981 and retired in August 2011. Hestand has served as principal bassoon in the Brooklyn Philharmonic and as second bassoon in the Lancaster (Ohio) Festival Orchestra. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, American Composers Orchestra, and Albany (N.Y.) Symphony Orchestra. A native of Columbus, Ohio, he holds bachelor’s and Master of Orchestral Performance degrees from Manhattan School of Music, and pursued graduate studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.
