A report in Friday’s (11/30) News Sentinel (Knoxville, Tennessee) states, “The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is one of 22 American orchestras to receive a first-year Getty Education and Community Investment Grant. The grant was awarded to expand the orchestra’s Music & Wellness program. ‘The KSO is thrilled to have been recognized in this manner for its work in the health and wellness field,’ said KSO Executive Director Rachel Ford. ‘Our Music & Wellness program has been in place for nine years, and this grant will enable us to extend the reach of the program in our community as we hire a music therapist, offer professional development for staff and musicians as well as increase the number of performances offered to patients.’ The Knoxville Symphony’s Music & Wellness program was piloted in 2004 and annually brings the healing powers of music to more than 6,000 patients, staff and visitors in area hospitals. The program places professional KSO musicians in chemotherapy treatment bays, on oncology inpatient floors, on cardiovascular in-patient floors, in the cardiovascular intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit, brain injury rehabilitation areas, senior care in-patient floors and hospital waiting areas.”
