The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has named DAVID HERBERT to the principal timpani post, effective July 10, 2013. He is currently principal timpani at the San Francisco Symphony, and prior to winning that appointment in 1994 he spent two years in the New World Symphony as principal timpani. For the past four summers Herbert has performed in the Aspen Festival Orchestra, also in the principal timpani post. As a soloist he has appeared with the San Francisco, New World, St. Louis, and Shanghai symphonies, the National Repertory Orchestra (Breckenridge, Colo.), and the Pacific Music Festival (Sapporo, Japan). Herbert holds a bachelor’s degree in performance from the St. Louis Conservatory and a master’s from The Juilliard School.
