On December 22 the Metropolitan Museum of Art will present an all-Bach program featuring instruments from the museum’s new Sau-Wing Lam collection of stringed instruments and bows. The concert will feature the Salomé Chamber Orchestra performing Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, plus two works with guest violinists Daniel Hope and Karen Gomyo. Hope will play the 1731 Baltic violin by Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù,” in Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041. For Bach’s Triple Concerto in D Major, BWV 1064, Gomyo will play a violin from the Met’s own collection, the Antonius violin by Antonio Stradivari, joined by Hope, as well as Sean Carpenter, who will play the ex Collin violin by Nicolò Amati, from the Sau-Wing collection. Future concerts showcasing the instruments in February, April, and May will feature works by Vivaldi, Kreisler, Sarasate, Piazzolla, Mozart, Lera Auerbach, and Richard Strauss, with the Salomé Chamber Orchestra and guests to include Philippe Quint and Chee-Yun.
