The Buffalo Philharmonic has released details of its 2013-14 season, which opens on September 18 at Kleinhans Music Hall with Music Director JoAnn Falletta leading Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul for cello and orchestra, with soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The season will comprise seventeen classical and twelve pops concerts, as well as the annual JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, in June. Among classical season highlights are the world premiere of Miguel Del Aguila’s Concerto Tango, featuring BPO principal cellist Roman Mekinulov; the U.S. premiere of Russell Platt’s Euridice, a serenade for strings; an “East Meets West” program that includes Charles Griffes’s tone poem The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan, Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, Debussy’s Nocturnes, and Zhao Jiping’s Pipa Concerto, with soloist Wu Man. Soloists scheduled to perform with the BPO include pianists Philippe Bianconi, Enrica Ciccarelli, Simone Dinnerstein, Yakov Kasman, Jon Kimura Parker, and; violinists Benjamin Beilman, Vadim Gluzman, Anne Akiko Meyers, and BPO Concertmaster Michael Ludwig; percussionist Colin Currie; clarinetist Ricardo Morales; and soprano Heidi Grant Murphy.
