In North Carolina, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is among the cultural organizations participating in Charlotte’s Ulysses Festival: Charlotte Spring Festival of the Arts, a series of lectures, exhibitions, and performances at venues throughout Charlotte during the month of April. The festival will open with a panel discussion, “Technology & Art: Gimmick or Transformation,” on April 4, and on April 19 the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will perform a program entitled “American Masters and Pioneers,” with works to include Gershwin’s An American in Paris and John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, as well as music inspired by Aphex Twin, a composer of electronic and ambient music. The Levine Museum of the New South will be the site on April 7 and 9 for performances of David Crowe’s multimedia work Mill Village: A Piedmont Rhapsody, featuring the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, narrator David Mills, singer/songwriter Don Gibson, and banjo player Earl Scruggs. Other organizations participating in the festival include the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Opera Carolina.
