In an opinion piece in Sunday’s (3/3) Reno Gazette-Journal, Scott Faulkner writes, “I moved to Reno for two years … 19 years ago. I came here to get a master’s degree at UNR and had no idea that I would make this my home. … I did quickly come to discover many things that make our community so livable. As a musician relocating from Seattle, one of these was the quality of an orchestral music scene I didn’t expect to discover here. … It is unusual, and a real point of pride, for a city our size to sustain and support two thriving professional orchestras—Reno Chamber Orchestra and Reno Philharmonic, which have existed a combined 83 years! As the executive director of the Chamber Orchestra and the principal bassist of the Philharmonic, I am fiercely proud of both organizations and love the diversity of music, experience and culture that these two ensembles provide. … The most significant common bond is that the orchestras share many of the same wonderful musicians. Even with many familiar faces on the stage, it is remarkable and surprising how distinctive the two experiences are. Different repertoires presented in different venues, by conductors with different interpretations, make for a healthy, rich and artistically diverse orchestral life that all citizens of the Truckee Meadows can share, enjoy and be extremely proud of for years to come.”
