Leon Botstein, music director of the American Symphony Orchestra and president of Bard College, has been awarded the Bruckner Society’s Medal of Honor. The medal was presented on February 24 at Symphony Space in New York City, just prior to the ASO’s performance of the 1887 version of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony. In recent years Botstein and the ASO have performed Bruckner Symphony Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7, the Mass No. 3, and the composer’s settings of Psalms 146 and 150. The Bruckner Society of America, founded in 1931 to champion and support performances of Bruckner’s music, previously has presented its Medal of Honor to John Barbirolli, Karl Böhm, Arturo Toscanini, Otto Klemperer, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Bernard Haitink, and Franz Welser-Möst.
