On March 27 and 28, New England Conservatory’s Sistema Fellows Program will host “Collaboration and Relationship Building Through Music Education,” a symposium for El Sistema-inspired music education programs in the Boston area, with the goal of strengthening ties and encouraging future collaborations between the various programs. It is the first such event for the NEC Sistema Fellows Program; similar events, known as “seminarios,” have been held in New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Under the guidance of Program Director Heath Marlow, ten members of the 2012-13 Fellows class have organized the events, during which 70 students from local El Sistema-inspired “nucleos” will gather for rehearsals and other educational activities at NEC’s Williams Hall and Pierce Hall, including workshops led by NEC Contemporary Improvisation faculty members Eden MacAdam-Somer and Nedelka Prescod. The public portion of the symposium, on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature remarks by Arlene Goldbard, an expert on arts and community building, followed by a panel discussion and breakout sessions for all participants.
