In Friday’s (3/15) Gazette (Montreal), Arthur Kaptainis writes, “The Dude is coming—with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Gustavo Dudamel … is one of four music directors visiting with their respective orchestras as part of the 2013-14 [Orchestra Symphonique de Montreal] season. The Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under Peter Oundjian and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec under Fabien Gabel are the other import bands appearing in the Maison symphonique. … ‘A home is not only a place where you live, but also a place where you invite people to come and share your culture,’ OSM music director Kent Nagano said in a telephone interview. … Of course the OSM itself has much to offer, including premières. There will be first performances of works by (among others) Montrealers Nicolas Gilbert and Serge Arcuri. Torontonian Christos Hatzis offers a score on a Shakespearean subject. … Nagano will also uphold his dedication to Viennese classics by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. … Probably the most awaited of the OSM commissions is Maan varjot (Earth’s Shadows) by the Finnish star composer Kaija Saariaho. This score for organ and orchestra will be heard on May 29 and June 1, the last two concerts of the season.”
