The South Carolina Philharmonic, based in Columbia, has announced details of its upcoming season, the orchestra’s 50th. The Columbia-based orchestra will perform the first of seven Masterworks concerts in October, with Music Director Morihiko Nakahara leading the world premiere of Joan Tower’s bassoon concerto with SCP Principal Bassoon Peter Kolkay as soloist. A second world premiere is scheduled for January 2014: a work by South Carolina composer John Fitz Rogers commissioned for the orchestra’s 50th anniversary. Other season highlights include an April program entitled “Gershwin, Gatsby, and All That Jazz,” featuring a work by Toru Takemitsu; for that program the SCP is collaborating with the Columbia Museum of Art, which is presenting an “Art Deco Japan” exhibit in spring 2014. A chamber ensemble of musicians from the SCP will also perform in the Trustus Theater’s winter production of Tom Stoppard’s play Every Good Boy Deserves Favor, with music by André Previn. Also new for 2013-14, the SCP will offer free tickets to children 17 and younger, with $5 rush tickets available for college students.
