In the highly competitive world of orchestral conducting, simply getting exposure can be challenge enough. To that end, the Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, sponsored by the League of American Orchestras, offers conductors the chance to show off performance abilities as well as rehearsal technique. On March 13, six conductors led Florida’s Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra at this year’s Conductor Preview, before an audience of music-director search committee members, artistic administrators, and artist managers and agents. The six conductors speak with SymphonyNOW about their experiences at the Preview and their outlook on the profession.

Also new this week: excerpts from Mary Sue Welsh’s biography of harpist Edna Phillips highlight the challenges Phillips faced as the first female member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Plus: the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq is the lead entry in a slideshow on arts and culture since the U.S.-led invasion.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
