California’s Berkeley Symphony will open its 2013-14 season on October 3 with the world premiere of Edmund Campion’s The Ossicles, a piece scored for acoustic instruments and computer technology that was co-commissioned by Cal Performances. Music Director Joana Carneiro will lead the program at Zellerbach Hall, which also includes Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Alessio Bax as soloist. A second world premiere, a new work for violin and orchestra by Samuel Carl Adams, is planned for February 2014, with soloist Anthony Marwood. Both Campion and Adams are natives of northern California. Also featured during the orchestra’s four Zellerbach Hall concerts are works by contemporary composers Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, and Brett Dean, as well as works by Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky. In 2013-14 the Berkeley Symphony will open its Under Construction New Music Series/Composers Program for the first time to applicants from across the country for the three slots in a yearlong mentorship program. The program operates in collaboration with EarShot: the National Orchestra Composition Discovery Network, and its partner organizations, the American Composers Forum, League of American Orchestras, New Music USA, and the American Composers Orchestra. Composers and mentors for the 2013-14 Under Construction/EarShot Partnership Series will be announced in early September.
