Orchestras are increasingly looking to forge stronger ties with their communities. One way is to work with local composers. The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra in Tucson is taking that approach this season with works by Tucson-based composers on each of its five programs. All the works by the local composers will be featured on the orchestra’s upcoming CD. Music Director Linus Lerner discusses the challenges and rewards of taking on ambitious projects with an all-volunteer group.

Also this week, Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Director Leonard Slatkin talks about the resilience of his orchestra—and its home city. And WQXR features Bach… on electric guitar.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
