The fifteenth annual MATA Festival in New York City will feature works by fifteen emerging composers from April 17-20 at the Paula Cooper Gallery in Manhattan and at Roulette, a performance space in Brooklyn. Opening night will feature the Israel-based Meitar Ensemble, which will perform Play May Shay Fay Bay, a MATA commission by Bryan Jacobs; Ofer Pelz’s Chinese Whispers, inspired by the game “telephone”; and Mosaique, Marcin Stancyzk’s piece for solo cello and electronics. The evening of April 19 will be devoted to composer-performers, and April 20’s “Magellan Modern” program will feature the contemporary-classical Talea Ensemble performing works by Evan Antonellis, Taylor Brook, Milica Djordjevic, Hugo Morales, and Mauro Lanza. Also part of the festival will be three free workshops open to the public. The first workshop, on the business of being a composer (April 18), will be hosted by Scott Winship, program manager for New Music USA, and composer and NewMusicBox.org editor Frank J. Oteri. The second workshop (April 19) will be a reading session of new American and Israeli works, with the Meitar Ensemble; and a third “Words and Music” workshop (April 20) will explore collaborations between composers, poets, and librettists, with composers David Del Tredici, Joan LaBarbara, and David Little, and librettist Royce Vavrek.
