In Thursday’s (4/4) Morning News (Florence, South Carolina), Melissa Rollins writes, “The Florence Symphony Orchestra will be joined by some special guests during its April 8 concert. Wilson High School’s Kristy Liao, Jonathan Ma and Olivia Ouyang were the three winners of the FSO’s second annual Young Artists Piano Competition. Liao, who came in first place, began playing the piano when she was just 5 years old. Three years later, she picked up the viola and learned to play that as well. … The first year the Florence Symphony Orchestra held its Young Artists Piano Competition, Liao came in third. She was happy to have placed both years but said that it was really more about the experience. … The three student winners will take part in the concert and play the pieces that they entered the competition with. Liao will perform Schumann’s Concerto in A minor, Opus 54, Movt. I. Ma will perform Mendelssohn’s Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Opus 25, Movt. I. Ouyang will perform Mozart’s Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, Movt. I.”
