New on SymphonyNOW: Musician as Business Owner

Posted on: April 5, 2013

As “entrepreneurship” continues to be the buzzword for today’s up-and-coming musicians, music schools are increasingly putting resources behind developing musicians’ business acumen. Symphony editor Jennifer Melick speaks with Juilliard alum and oboist Kristin Olson about her side business Reed Lizard, an oboe reed-making firm with an emphasis on Baroque oboe reeds, supported by one of Juilliard’s Jonathan Madrigano Entrepreneurship grants.

Also this week: pianist and blogger Jeremy Denk, writing in the New Yorker, muses on the sometimes surprising role of the music teacher, and Brooklyn Academy of Music celebrates April Fool Day’s with a promotional video for Baby Einstein on the Beach.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
