The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, based in Punta Gorda on the Gulf Coast of Florida, has appointed RAFFAELE PONTI conductor and music director. He succeeds T. FRANCIS WADA, who is retiring. Ponti is also artistic director and conductor of the Paducah (Ky.) Symphony Orchestra and the Genesee (N.Y.) Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with several prominent U.S. orchestras as well as the touring company Italia Konzert Opera International. Trained initially in violin, piano, and trumpet, Ponti played in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s trumpet section and subsequently as assistant principal trumpet in the Cleveland Orchestra. He is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music.
