ARIEL BARNES has been named principal cello at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in British Columbia. A winner of the 2012 Canada Council Instrument Bank Competition, he has performed widely as a concerto soloist and chamber musician. Barnes is a former member of the Borealis String Quartet and Trio Accord, as well as a founder of the Scotiabank Northern Lights Music Festival in Ajijic, Mexico. He has recorded for such labels as Universal Music, Atma Classiques, Skylark Records, and Centrediscs. His solo and chamber music performances have been broadcast on several CBC Radio Canada programs, and he was recently selected as one of six cellists from across the nation to participate in the Canadian Bach Cello Suite Project.
