Orchestras often take the initiative in commissioning new works, but what happens when instrumental soloists lead the way? Looking to commission a new cello concerto from Avner Dorman, cellist Inbal Segev made it happen by collaborating with four orchestras: the Alaska’s Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, which premiered the work in February under Music Director Randall Craig Fleisher; Hudson Valley Philharmonic in Poughkeepsie, New York; Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional in Bogota, Colombia; and Youngstown Symphony Orchestra in Ohio. Segev speaks with Symphony’s Jennifer Melick about the process.

Also this week, conductor Ivan Fischer reflects on the state of orchestras today, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma makes the case for arts in our communities on Arts Advocacy Day.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
