In Wednesday’s (5/1) Connecticut Post (Bridgeport), Phyllis A.S. Boros writes, “After reviewing more than 150 applicants from around the world, a search committee for the Greater Bridgeport Symphony has selected five finalists to succeed Maestro Gustav Meier. Meier took the podium for the last time as principal conductor and music director of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony on April 20 after a 41-year run. Along with broad musical responsibilities, Meier’s successor will be charged with expanding the orchestra’s audiences, financial support, community outreach and children’s programs. Alexander Morr, the orchestra’s executive director, said the original pool of candidates came from the United States, Korea, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Ukraine. The candidates were assessed by a search committee of musicians, music educators and board members who weighed interviews and excerpts of conducting videos. The search committee members, along with input from the community, will determine the next Greater Bridgeport Symphony leader after the conclusion of the 2013-14 season next April. Each candidate will conduct one concert next season.” The finalists are Eric Jacobsen, Lawrence Loh, Jonathan Andrew Govias, Constantine Kitsopoulos, and Jacomo Rafael Bairos. “It is anticipated that a selection will be made soon after the final concert, so the new GBS music director can make his official debut at the start of the 2014-15 season.”
